Good News Regarding Cancer!

Dear Reader,

While cancer remains a devilishly cunning disease, there's been a good amount of progress made in the fight according to a new study appearing in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. One unlikely problem in the study of modern medicine's effectiveness against cancer is that efforts to fight other diseases have also been a success. As fewer die from heart disease, strokes and accidents, more people are alive longer and are therefore at risk of being diagnosed with (or dying from) cancer.

We know that cancer grows out of normal body cells, and appears to happen when the growth of cells is out of control and cells divide too rapidly. It can also occur when cells forget how to die. There are different types of cancer, and it can happen in almost any organ or tissue. There are many known causes of this disease including benzene and other dangerous chemicals, drinking too much alcohol, toxins in the environment, exposure to too much sun, genetic problems, obesity, radiation and viruses. The cause of many cancers remains a mystery.

The principle investigator in recent work on cancer, Samir Soneji, is an assistant professor at Dartmouth College's Geisel School of Medicine who found that deaths from cancer dropped by only 12%, while deaths from heart disease went down by 62% and deaths as the result of accident fell by more than a third during the years from 1970 to 2008. The risk of getting cancer goes up with advancing age, making it more likely that longer living Americans will at some point develop this disease.

The team estimated how the years of life lost to cancer are directly impacted by cancer deaths, and indirectly affected by higher cancer incidence because we're living longer as a result of improvements to prevention, detection and treatment of other dangerous diseases. It was in this area that the team saw much progress in cutting the cancer death rates.

One instance is lung cancer deaths, falling dramatically during the years 1985 to 2005, mostly due to people quitting smoking. The decline wasn't as big as it could have been because more people were avoiding death from other things, and living long enough to get lung cancer.

Good News Regarding Cancer! Continued...

Limiting deaths from colon, prostate and breast cancers has also been seen.

Getting a cancer diagnoses is one of the toughest things you can ever deal with. You can't prepare yourself, but knowing a bit about what's going to happen might help. Hearing the words "cancer" and your name is sure to make you feel anxious, fearful or overwhelmed - maybe all three at once. One of the best things you can do for yourself is to find someone you trust to bring with you to your appointments. It can be your spouse or partner, a good friend or supportive family member... anyone who you feel able to rely on and who can be there for you.

If you find yourself unable to ask questions, your companion can do this for you. They might also take notes, writing down the type, size and location of your cancer, as well as the treatment options, side effects and effectiveness. There's a lot of information to take in. Having notes on paper will be helpful to refer to later... in the days and weeks ahead. Once you've gotten a cancer diagnosis, it's the time to ask about second opinions and alternative treatment options.

To your good health,
